In a golfing career spanning 26 years at the highest level of the amateur game, highlights have included:

  • Most capped English golfer (153 appearances)
  • Highest career win ratio in internationals of any British amateur golfer
  • Winner of Amateur Championship on two occasions
  • Winner of individual event in World Amateur Championships and European Championship (twice)
  • Captained England to a record 5 successive Home International victories
  • Winner of Golf Writers award
  • Making the cut in The Masters in 1978, a feat that remains unique for a British amateur through 2004
  • 5 times Walker Cup player
  • The only person to have played in the winning team, to have captained the winning team and to have won the individual trophy in the World Championships
